We moved house in March 2025 into a detached property from the 1970s that required significant improvements. We planned to knock down an internal wall to create a larger living space, and every room needed decorating, while the old gas combi-boiler in the kitchen was due for replacement and relocation. I was keen on installing solar panels to help lower our electricity bills. After learning about Heat Source Pumps, we decided to take a chance and make use of the government grant to replace the gas boiler with one of these pumps. Although we were unsure if it would provide sufficient heat for the British winter, we chose Aira, a well-established company in Sweden known for supplying Heat Source Pumps to homes in much colder and longer winters than ours. This page outlines our installation journey, energy usage, and ongoing costs.

The charts below show the monthly usage and export amounts from our Octopus app.   Octopus are the company we selected for electricity supply due to their flexible plans that they have for people with solar panels and heat pumps.   The chart are split across 2025 and 2026 because our heat pump and solar panels were installed in May 2025 and the solar export tarif began in July 2025.

So far we have been very pleased with Octopus as an electricity supply company, if you sign up to Octopus use this referral link and get a £50 credit to your opening account:

I've also summarised the annual usage and export into a spreadsheet and produced an annual summary chart.
We use very little electricity in the summer months and are credited to the account for the exported electricity. In the winter months we generate far less and use more for the heat pump.

Overall our electricity monthly direct debit is set to £60, and we have zero gas bills.  (The Gas supply has been decomissioned and the meter removed, so there isn't even the gas standing charge!)
